More than 600,000 households switched their electricity supplier last month

In March alone, hundreds and thousands of us chose to seek out a better deal elsewhere

Recent figures show that last month more than 600,000 customers switched to a different electricity supplier. This is a significant increase of 29% – almost a third – when compared to the same month in 2018.

These statistics, which come from the latest report by Energy UK, reveal that around 615,503 customers decided to take their electricity bills in hand by shopping around and finding a different supplier. This brings the total number of switched customers up to more than 1.4 million so far for 2019 – an increase of 12% based on the same period last year.

Chief Executive of Energy UK, Lawrence Slade, expressed his feelings about this new data, describing it as a positive change.

Slade comments: _“It’s very positive to see increasing numbers of customers continuing to switch and engaging in the market to make sure they’re on the best deal for them – and, of course, this number doesn’t include those customers who choose to move to a new tariff with their current supplier, which would add many more thousands of households.

“It’s most likely that this month’s increase is in response to the recent price cap rise announced by Ofgem, showing how the price of electricity and gas is affected by variable costs – the vast majority of which are out of suppliers’ direct control. While we hope the engagement levels remain high, we can only really assess the cap’s effect on switching over a longer period of time when it might fall as well as increase.” _

Slade added that providing a sustainable environment is one way to produce long-term benefits, stating that making homes and business energy efficient would ensure “lasting savings” for all energy customers.

These latest findings suggest that bill payers and households are becoming more confident when it comes to comparing and ultimately choosing a supplier.
